Creed pulled into the police-reserved hospital parking spot and shut off the engine. Lacey had been true to her word and watched him like a hawk all the way. He really would have made other arrangements had he felt woozy or like he was struggling to drive, but he still felt energized from the adrenaline rush. He figured he had another few minutes before it would crash and leave him shaking.
âCreed? You okay?â Lacey asked from the open passenger door. Scarlett was already out of the vehicle and waiting patiently at her side. He nodded and she shut the door.
Creed climbed out, stifling a gasp at the pain the movement caused. Lacey wrapped a hand around his biceps as though to hold him up. âIf I fall, just get out of the way, okay? Iâd squash you like a bug.â
She laughed and the sound washed over him like a wave of warmth. His heart clenched, and once again, the pain of losing her flashed through his mind in vivid detail and saturated with heartache.
âGood to be compared to a bug.â
âWhat? No, Iâd neverââ
âIâm teasing. Letâs find Katherine.â
Yeah, they needed to do that before he made a complete fool of himself. âIâm going to call my mother and ask her to bring us some dry clothes.â
âThat would be lovely.â
âWhat size do you wear?â
She told him. âA brush would be nice, too. My hair needs some TLC in a very desperate way.â
He paused. âMay I use your phone?â
âOf course.â
He took it and passed the information on to his mother, who demanded to know if he was all right. âYes, I promise, Iâm fine. And so is Lacey.â
âCreed, be honest. I know you think youâre protecting me by not giving me all the details, but Iâll tell you right now, that just makes things worse.â
âMomââ
âBecause my imagination can come up with all kinds of scenarios, as you know.â
Boy, did he.
âDo I need to come stay with you? Take care of you? Bring you some food?â
âJust the clothes, please.â
âFine, but if I think youâre hurt worse than youâre letting on, Iâm not going to be happy and neither will your father.â
âI know. Thank you.â
âIâll be on my way shortly. Give Lacey a hug for me.â
âWill do. Thank you.â
âI love you, Creed.â
âI love you, too, Mom.â He hung up and let out a slow breath, then a short laugh. His mother could be a force to be reckoned with and he loved her dearly.
âShe doesnât hate me, does she?â Lacey asked.
âHate you?â Creed eyed her. âNot at all. She told me to give you a hug. Sheâs missed you.â
âIâve missed her, too. There were days she was more of a mother to me than my own mom.â
He gave her a side hug and kissed the edge of her temple. âI know.â
Lacey went still and Creed mentally slapped himself for initiating the intimate moment, then dropped his arm. âThat was from Mom.â
âOf course.â
Katherine stepped into the waiting room, dissipating the awkward moment. She raised a brow.
