Creed pulled into the police-reserved hospital parking spot and shut off the engine. Lacey had been true to her word and watched him like a hawk all the way. He really would have made other arrangements had he felt woozy or like he was struggling to drive, but he still felt energized from the adrenaline rush. He figured he had another few minutes before it would crash and leave him shaking.

“Creed? You okay?” Lacey asked from the open passenger door. Scarlett was already out of the vehicle and waiting patiently at her side. He nodded and she shut the door.

Creed climbed out, stifling a gasp at the pain the movement caused. Lacey wrapped a hand around his biceps as though to hold him up. “If I fall, just get out of the way, okay? I’d squash you like a bug.”

She laughed and the sound washed over him like a wave of warmth. His heart clenched, and once again, the pain of losing her flashed through his mind in vivid detail and saturated with heartache.

“Good to be compared to a bug.”

“What? No, I’d never—”

“I’m teasing. Let’s find Katherine.”

Yeah, they needed to do that before he made a complete fool of himself. “I’m going to call my mother and ask her to bring us some dry clothes.”

“That would be lovely.”

“What size do you wear?”

She told him. “A brush would be nice, too. My hair needs some TLC in a very desperate way.”

He paused. “May I use your phone?”

“Of course.”

He took it and passed the information on to his mother, who demanded to know if he was all right. “Yes, I promise, I’m fine. And so is Lacey.”

“Creed, be honest. I know you think you’re protecting me by not giving me all the details, but I’ll tell you right now, that just makes things worse.”

“Mom—”

“Because my imagination can come up with all kinds of scenarios, as you know.”

Boy, did he.

“Do I need to come stay with you? Take care of you? Bring you some food?”

“Just the clothes, please.”

“Fine, but if I think you’re hurt worse than you’re letting on, I’m not going to be happy and neither will your father.”

“I know. Thank you.”

“I’ll be on my way shortly. Give Lacey a hug for me.”

“Will do. Thank you.”

“I love you, Creed.”

“I love you, too, Mom.” He hung up and let out a slow breath, then a short laugh. His mother could be a force to be reckoned with and he loved her dearly.

“She doesn’t hate me, does she?” Lacey asked.

“Hate you?” Creed eyed her. “Not at all. She told me to give you a hug. She’s missed you.”

“I’ve missed her, too. There were days she was more of a mother to me than my own mom.”

He gave her a side hug and kissed the edge of her temple. “I know.”

Lacey went still and Creed mentally slapped himself for initiating the intimate moment, then dropped his arm. “That was from Mom.”

“Of course.”

Katherine stepped into the waiting room, dissipating the awkward moment. She raised a brow.
